“Duomo D’Autore”

Contemporary Shots for Milan Cathedral

24 February 2026 - 24 May 2026
Museo del duomo - P.za del Duomo, 12, 20122 Milano MI

“Duomo d’Autore. Contemporary Shots for Milan Cathedral” will be hosted by the Museo del Duomo di Milano, in the evocative Sala Gian Galeazzo, in the heart of the city. The project stems from the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo’s desire to enhance the dialogue between contemporary photography and the Duomo di Milano, a symbolic place capable of inspiring generations of artists.

Through sixteen images, created between the late 1950s and 2025, the Cathedral is revealed from unexpected perspectives: not merely a monument, but a living presence, a space for interpretation, and a stage for visions. Each shot becomes a narrative, an emotion, a personal reinterpretation of a timeless icon.

Within this collective journey, a particularly prominent role is assigned to Gian Paolo Barbieri, the protagonist of a gaze that blends elegance, style, and visual power. With his photograph 1991, Aly Dunne in Gianfranco Ferré, Duomo di Milano, Barbieri transforms the Duomo into a sophisticated and timeless setting. Gothic architecture engages with form, light, and composition, resulting in an image that transcends documentation to become artistic vision.

Alongside other great masters of photography, Barbieri reaffirms the Duomo’s extraordinary ability to reinvent itself through different languages and sensibilities, while preserving its evocative power.

The exhibition, part of the cultural program “Con gli occhi del Duomo,” demonstrates how photography continues to be a privileged medium for exploring, reinterpreting, and conveying the Cathedral’s identity, enriching its iconographic and symbolic heritage.
