Fifth Edition OPEN ARCHIVES
For the fifth edition of Archivi Aperti, on October 24 the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation opens the doors of its historical archive to the public, allowing them to discover its fabulous artistic heritage that unites testimonies of our culture and history, from the Sixties to the present day.
Memory and Oblivion is the theme chosen by Rete Fotografia for the 5th edition of Open Archives Week. The previous editions have been very successful, showing how the initiative is credible and supported by strong ideas. For this reason, it is being presented again today with a much wider and almost doubled participation, thanks to the numerous new adhesions of archives, institutions, and foundations—among the most important in Milan and Lombardy—committed to promoting the knowledge of photographic culture. In fact, the week dedicated to Open Archives sees the participation of 42 entities, confirming the quality of Rete Fotografia’s work and consolidating its role as a reference association in the photographic field.
The choice of the memory/oblivion binomial characterizes current philosophical, scientific, historical, and sociological reflections on the modalities of access to and the formation of knowledge, where the image assumes a central role in the construction and transmission of knowledge through the web and communication technologies. The Gian Paolo Barbieri Archive will structure the path, aiming to draw attention to the cardinal elements that have marked the history of photography by Gian Paolo Barbieri—an archive that constitutes a historical memory but remains constantly contemporary.
