Yves Saint Laurent and Photography
The Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation ETS is participating with four works in Yves Saint Laurent and Photography, on view from June 11 to September 28, 2026, at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. Organized in collaboration with the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris, the Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, and ICP, the exhibition is part of a major international project bringing together more than 300 works and archival materials to explore the pivotal role of photography in shaping the visual identity of the House of Yves Saint Laurent across four decades of fashion and visual culture.
Previously presented in Arles and curated by Simon Baker together with Nastasia Alberti and Clémentine Cuinet, the exhibition offers a renewed perspective on twentieth-century fashion photography, highlighting the creative dialogue between Yves Saint Laurent and some of the most influential photographers of their time, including Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, and Gian Paolo Barbieri. The exhibition underscores photography’s role not merely as a promotional tool, but as a powerful medium for cultural expression, identity-building, and visual storytelling.
The four photographs by Gian Paolo Barbieri selected for the exhibition bear witness to the profound professional and artistic relationship between the photographer and Yves Saint Laurent, revealing a shared pursuit of innovation, elegance, and the creation of iconic imagery.
Their inclusion in the exhibition further affirms the international significance of Barbieri’s work and his decisive contribution to shaping the aesthetics of contemporary fashion. Presented within a project supported by Saint Laurent and leading international cultural institutions, these photographs reaffirm the central role of his oeuvre in the ongoing dialogue between photography, fashion, and twentieth-century visual culture.
